Search Queries
A name or location entered in a search tool is transmitted directly to the outside company that operates that tool. The provider processes the request and supplies its own results. We do not retain or record those search terms on our systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
We retain an email or other direct message as needed to respond. It remains within our organization unless disclosure is required by a valid legal obligation.
Data We Gather Automatically
When a visitor loads a page, the server automatically receives basic technical and usage details:
- Page-view timestamps
- Browser name and version
- Device type and operating system
- IP address assigned to the device
- Pages viewed and the time spent on them
- The referring site, when one is available
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files placed on a device. We use them with analytics services to review traffic in aggregate, including which pages are popular and where visits tend to end. A browser can block cookies through its settings, although doing so may change how some site features work.

No Criminal-Record Data on File
Broome County Criminal History does not compile, maintain, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It publishes general directions to records held by the Broome County Sheriff's divisions, the local criminal courts, the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), and the New York State Sex Offender Registry. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and visitor information is not assembled into a consumer report or a record about another person.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the site's search boxes. Information submitted through one of those tools is governed by that company's privacy policy rather than this policy. Because each partner controls its own retention and disclosure practices, visitors should read the applicable policy before entering a search.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to Broome County Sheriff pages, court portals, New York State agencies, legal-aid resources, or outside search services. Once a visitor leaves this website, the destination's privacy policy applies. Review it before providing personal information.
Some advertising companies may use their own systems to follow activity across websites for targeted advertising. We do not run that cross-site tracking infrastructure.
Who Might See Your Data
We do not sell personal information. Data may nevertheless be received by:
- Analytics providers that measure site traffic and performance
- Search partners processing a query submitted through their tool
- Advertising networks placing ads on the website
- A government or law-enforcement body acting under a valid legal order
How We Protect Your Data
We use customary security measures to protect collected information. No internet-connected system is completely secure, however, so we cannot guarantee that a breach will never occur.
Users Under 18
This website is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from a person under 18. If we learn that a minor supplied such data, we will delete it promptly.
Your Data Rights
New York's Freedom of Information Law, Public Officers Law Article 6, governs requests to public agencies; it does not turn this privately operated website into a government records custodian. Official criminal-history access is also limited by Executive Law §837(6) and sealing rules such as Criminal Procedure Law §160.50. Those laws govern agency records and dissemination, not ordinary site-usage data. Regardless, visitors may ask us to:
- Provide a copy of personal information we hold about them
- Correct personal information that is inaccurate
- Delete their personal information
- Stop certain forms of data processing
Updates to This Policy
This privacy policy may be revised. A replacement takes effect when it is posted here with an updated effective date, so visitors may return to review current practices.
